Bottles of homemade wine pay tribute to those lost in a train accident years ago. The monument marks the spot of a derailment in the Kresna Gorge in Southwestern Bulgaria on its way to Greece. Safety on Bulgarian railways has improved tremendously in recent years with help from the European Union. After the fall of the Communist Pary in 1989, Bulgaria struggled to maintain the high safety standards for the state owned railway. While now European Union financing helps improve the train lines, Bulgarians still pay homage to those lost
